INDUSTRY'S SMALLEST, SINGLE TEMPERATURE SENSOR AND FAN CONTROLLER IN MSOP PACKAGE

SUNNYVALE, CA-May 6, 2004-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX6641, a small, low-cost single temperature sensor and fan controller in an MSOP package that saves board space. The MAX6641 monitors its own temperature and the temperature of an external diode-connected transistor up to 100°C with an accuracy of ±1°C. The device uses this temperature data to automatically adjust the speed of a cooling fan. The combination of small package and automatic fan control makes the MAX6641 the right candidate for a variety of cost-sensitive applications such as notebook and personal computers.

The MAX6641 features an easy-to-use SMBus interface that makes the data available to the system at any time. The internal PWM fan-speed controller uses the temperature data to adjust the speed of a cooling fan. This minimizes unwanted fan noise and power drain when the system is running cool, but provides maximum cooling when required. The MAX6641 also has a programmable alarm output, which can be used to generate interrupt, throttle, or overtemperature shutdown signals. Its small, 8-pin MSOP package (3mm x 3mm) saves board space, which is important in portable applications.

The MAX6641 operates from an input voltage range of 3.0V to 5.5V and only consumes 500µA of supply current. Prices start at $0.99 (2500-up, FOB USA).

SMBus is a trademark of Intel Corporation.
