LOW-COST SPEAKER AMPLIFIERS OFFER UP TO 1.3W INTO 4-Ohm, HEADPHONE SENSING, AND PIN-FOR-PIN COMPATIBLE PACKAGING

SUNNYVALE, CA-March 23, 2004-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX9716/MAX9717, bridge-tied load (BTL) audio amplifiers in a tiny 3mm x 3mm, 8-pin TDFN package. The MAX9717 features a headphone sense input (BTL/SE) that detects a headphone connection to the device, muting the speaker while driving the headphone as a single-ended load. The MAX9716/MAX9717 are ideal for portable audio applications such as PDAs, cell phones, and smart phones where space and cost are at a premium.

The MAX9716/MAX9717 are single-channel amplifiers and deliver 1.4W continuous power into a 4W load with less than 1% THD + N and operate from a 2.7V to 5V single supply. These devices also deliver 525mW continuous power into an 4-Ohm load while operating from a 3V single supply. A 73dB at 1kHz power-supply rejection ratio (PSRR) allows these devices to operate from noisy digital supplies without an additional linear regulator.

The audio amplifiers are available as adjustable-gain amplifiers (MAX9716/MAX9717A), or with internally fixed gains of 6dB, 9dB, and 12dB (MAX9717B/MAX9717C/MAX9717D) to reduce component count.

The MAX9716/MAX9717 feature a low-power shutdown mode that disables the bias generator and amplifiers, reducing the quiescent current consumption below 10nA. These devices feature MaximOs industry-leading, comprehensive click-and-pop suppression circuitry, which reduces audible clicks and pops during startup and shutdown.

The MAX9716 is pin-compatible with the LM4890, and available in 9-bump UCSP^™, 3mm x 3mm 8-pin TDFN, and 8-pin µMAX packages. The MAX9717 is pin-compatible with the TPA711 and available in 9-bump UCSP, 8-pin TDFN, and 8-pin µMAX packages. Both devices operate over the -40°C to +85°C extended temperature range. Prices for the MAX9716 start at $0.61, and $0.62 for the MAX9717 (100,000-up, FOB USA).
