-48V, HOT-SWAP CONTROLLERS OFFER HIGH RELIABILITY AND SUPERIOR FAULT PROTECTION
SUNNYVALE, CA-August 11, 2003-Maxim Integrated Products
(NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX5920/MAX5921/MAX5939, the industry's most reliable -48V, hot-swap controllers for telecom, networking, and computer-server line cards. These devices allow line cards to be safely inserted and removed from a live backplane without causing glitches on the system power-supply rail.
Rated for -20V to -80V inputs, the MAX5920/MAX5921/MAX5939 are ideal for -48V telecom-power backplanes. The MAX5920 is a drop-in, second source for LT1640 and LT4250, and the MAX5921/MAX5939 are pin-compatible with and provide features superior to the LT1640 and LT4250. All devices can withstand -100V input-voltage transients and are immune to input-voltage steps caused by battery switchover in telecom systems. During an input-voltage step, these devices limit the current drawn by the load to a safe level without turning off the power to the load.
The MAX5921/MAX5939 provide superior fault protection by exponentially pulling down the GATE current in response to severe overcurrent fault conditions and by providing a fast, 450mA GATE pulldown current in case of short-circuit conditions. The MAX5920/MAX5921/MAX5939 feature an internal-voltage clamp that protects the GATE of the external MOSFET from high-voltage potentials.
Additional features include input-undervoltage/output-overvoltage protection, thermal shutdown, and a power-good status indicator. The MAX5920/MAX5939 provide latched fault management and the MAX5921 is available with autoretry fault management.
The MAX5920/MAX5921/MAX5939 are available in an 8-pin SO package and operate in the extended temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). Prices start at $1.47 for the MAX5920 and $1.80 for MAX5921/MAX5939 (1000-up, FOB USA).
