HIGH-PRECISION BATTERY FUEL GAUGE COSTS LESS THAN A $1.00, IS IDEAL FOR HANDHELD PRODUCTS

SUNNYVALE, CA-March 24, 2003-Dallas Semiconductor (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the DS2740 high-precision coulomb counter IC. The DS2740 provides high-precision, current-flow measurement data to accurately monitor battery capacity. The DS2740's direct price is less than a $1.00 (100k-up), making it the most affordable fuel gauge on the market and ideal for cost-sensitive applications.

The DS2740's 15-bit current measurement has a resolution of 78µA and a dynamic range of 2.56A when used with a 20m sense resistor. (Using a value less than 20m can increase the current input range.) For pulse-load applications, an analog input filter extends the dynamic range even further. With a current ADC offset error of <2µV and a gain error of <1%, the DS2740 coulomb counter provides a highly accurate report of remaining battery capacity.

Portable products increasingly run on lower power. During active operation, the DS2740 uses 65µA of power (max). It can also revert to a low-power sleep mode of only 1µA, which increases battery run time by minimizing drain on the battery. Its tiny 8-pin µMAX package is essential when space is a premium. These features make the DS2740 coulomb counter ideal for handheld wireless products such as PDAs, mobile phones, and digital cameras.

Through its 1-Wire® interface, the DS2740 provides the host system read/write access to status and current measurement registers. Each device has a factory-programmed 64-bit net address. This allows the device to be individually addressed by the host system, supporting multibattery slot operation.

Prices start at $0.98 (100k-up, FOB USA). An evaluation kit is available to speed design.
