COMPACT, MULTIRATE SFF/SFP LIMITING AMPLIFIER FOR SONET, GIGABIT ETHERNET, AND FIBRE CHANNEL APPLICATIONS
SUNNYVALE, CA-February 6, 2003-Maxim Integrated Products
(NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX3748 +3.3V, multirate, limiting amplifier with a programmable loss-of-signal indicator. Combining the MAX3748 limiting amplifier with the MAX3744 transimpedance amplifier and MAX3735/MAX3740 laser drivers forms an ideal 3-chip solution for SFP modules with digital diagnostic capability. The MAX3748 operates from 155Mbps up to 3.2Gbps and can be DC-coupled to the TIA. This device is ideal for SFF and SFP digital diagnostic modules for SONET, Gigabit Ethernet, and Fibre Channel applications.
When DC-coupled to the MAX3744 TIA, the MAX3748 provides a receive-signal-strength indicator (RSSI) for digital diagnostic applications. This RSSI can be used for receive-power monitoring. This product combination implements SFF-8472 digital diagnostics while allowing the TIA to be packaged in a low-cost 4-pin TO-46 header.
Operating from a single +3.3V supply, the MAX3748 has greater than 5mV input sensitivity and 185µVRMS input-referred noise. It consumes only 100mW of power. A programmable signal-detect function adjusts to different assert and deassert levels, maintaining a 2.2dB hysterisis. The MAX3748 has low 8ps deterministic jitter and 3psRMS random jitter, and input voltages from 5mV to 1200mV. It typically provides a 800mV output.
The MAX3748 is available in a 3mm x 3mm 16-pin QFN package over the extended temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). Prices start at $7.00 (1000-up, FOB USA). An evaluation kit is available to speed design.
