UNIQUE LOW-COST HEADPHONE AMPLIFIER ELIMINATES DC-BLOCKING CAPACITORS AND GAIN-SETTING RESISTORS
SUNNYVALE, CA-November 27, 2002-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX4411, the latest DirectDrive-enabled audio IC. The MAX4411 headphone amplifier combines Maxim's patented stereo DirectDrive technology and a fixed-gain configuration, eliminating the need for both the bulky DC-blocking capacitors and external gain-setting resistors. The result is a low-cost, ultra-compact, headphone amplifier that requires very few external components. It is ideal for compact, portable equipment with audio playback.
DirectDrive generates a ground-referenced output from a single 1.8V to 3.6V supply which, unlike competing solutions, does not require a midrail DC bias voltage to be applied to the headphone jack ground pin. This doubles the dynamic range of the output swing and simplifies end-product design and reliability.
The MAX4411 has a fixed gain of -1.5V/V, produces 80mW per channel into a 16 load, and has only 0.003% THD + N. A high 86dB PSRR allows the MAX4411 to operate directly from noisy supplies. Independent left/right, low-power shutdown controls make it possible to optimize power savings in mixed-mode mono/stereo applications. Besides minimizing size, the elimination of DC-blocking capacitors improves the amplifier's low-frequency response and allows full range, audio reproduction which is especially important for music and video playback. Comprehensive click-and-pop reduction circuitry ensures fast turn-on/turn-off times without audible glitches. The outputs include ±8kV ESD protection.
The MAX4411 is available in a tiny 16-bump 2mm x 2mm x 0.6mm chip-scale package (UCSP) and a 20-pin QFN (4mm x 4mm x 0.8mm) package. These packages are ideal for cell phones, smart phones, MP3 players, PDAs, notebook computers, DVD players, and general portable-audio applications. Specifications are guaranteed over a -40°C to +85°C temperature range. Prices for the MAX4411EBE start at $0.49 (100,000-up, FOB USA).
