HIGH-PERFORMANCE, DUAL-PHASE, PARALLELABLE, DC-DC CONTROLLER WITH VRM 9.0 VID PROGRAMMABLE OUTPUTS

SUNNYVALE, CA-September 3, 2002-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX5037 dual-phase, parallelable PWM controller, which allows the design of high-output-current, compact power supplies with minimal external components. The MAX5037's internal voltage regulator allows operation from a 5V, 12V, or 24V power bus. The 4A integrated MOSFET drivers and 2W package power dissipation allow over 60A output current. Moreover, multiple DC-DC controller modules can be paralleled to achieve higher output currents in units of 60A per module. The MAX5037's average current-mode control scheme allows designers to achieve current-limit as well current-sharing accuracy of ±5%. This results in small inductor and small (or fewer) external MOSFETs, thus reducing power-supply size and cost. The ±5% current-sharing accuracy is maintained between the phases and paralleled modules. In addition, a 180-degree out-of-phase operation reduces input capacitance requirements, further reducing power-supply size and cost. The ±5% accurate internal oscillator frequency is pin selectable at 250kHz or 500kHz per phase, which results in 500kHz or 1MHz effective switching frequency at the output.

The MAX5037 includes an on-board 5-bit D/A converter compliant with Intel's VRM 9.0 specifications, offering VID programmable outputs with ±0.8% accuracy over the rated operating temperature range. The MAX5037's active adaptive voltage-positioning circuit not only provides excellent load-transient response, but also maximizes efficiency (up to 93%) by reducing power loss in the high-current PC board traces. For added safety, the device includes overvoltage protection, which latches off the top MOSFET and latches on the bottom MOSFET in case of an output overvoltage condition. Additionally, the MAX5037 includes thermal shutdown and a phase failure detector to warn the microprocessor of impending power-supply failure in the event that one of the phases fails. Other features include external frequency synchronization, phase-shifted clock output, true differential remote output-voltage sensing, and power-good output.

The MAX5037 operates over the -40°C to +85°C temperature range and is available in a 44-pin MQFP or 44-pin QFN package. A 52A VRM 9.0 module EV kit (fully compliant with Intelfs VRM 9.0 specifications) is available. For a similar part without the 5-bit internal DAC, refer to the MAX5038 (fixed output voltage version) or the MAX5041 (adjustable output voltage version). Prices start at $2.66 (1000-up, FOB USA).
