SYSTEM MONITOR IN 10-PIN µMAX PROVIDES LOW-COST TEMPERATURE AND VOLTAGE FAULT DETECTION
SUNNYVALE, CA-June 3, 2002-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX6683 system monitor. Housed in a tiny 10-pin µMAX package, the MAX6683 monitors system temperature and four external voltages, generating an interrupt when a voltage or temperature measurement falls outside a programmable limit threshold.
The MAX6683 system supervisor has an on-board digital temperature sensor that measures the local temperature with 2°C accuracy (max) at +25°C, 3°C accuracy (max) over a temperature range of -20°C to +85°C, and 5°C accuracy (max) over the -40°C to +125°C range.
In addition, the MAX6683 monitors four external voltages, nominally +5V, +2.5V, +1.8V, and its own supply voltage of +3.3V, with an accuracy of better than 1%. Other voltages are easily accommodated.
When a temperature measurement exceeds the user-programmed temperature threshold, or when an input voltage falls outside the programmed limits, the MAX6683 generates a latched interrupt output at its ALERT-bar pin. Three different interrupt modes are available and, if desired, interrupts can be masked out. The MAX6683 measures temperature and voltage continuously, even after the ALERT-bar pin has been set. Temperature and voltage data can be read at any time.
Communication with the device is through a 2-wire serial interface accepting standard SMBus protocol. This interface is used to program the configuration of the MAX6683, including the temperature alarm threshold and under/overvoltage alarm thresholds. The MAX6683 operates from a supply voltage between +2.7V and +5.5V and has an active supply current of just 200µA (typ) and a standby current of 10µA (max). Prices start at $1.84 (1000-up, FOB USA).
