SAVE SPACE WITH INDUSTRY'S FIRST 8-DIGIT 14-/16 SEGMENT STARBURST LED DISPLAY DRIVER WITH BUILT-IN FONTS

SUNNYVALE, CA-May 31, 2002-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX6954 LED display driver and controller. Available in 36-pin SSOP and 40-pin DIP packages, the MAX6954 interfaces microprocessors to sixteen 7-segment, eight 14-/16-segment LED displays, 128 discrete LEDs, or a combination of digit types.

Controlled through a 4-wire, 26MHz, SPI-/QSPI-/MICROWIRE-compatible serial interface, the MAX6954 includes a full ASCII 104-character font for 14- and 16- segment displays and also a hexadecimal font for 7-segment displays. Multiplex scan circuitry and RAM that stores each digit are also included on chip.

Each digit features an independent 16-step LED intensity control. Maximum segment current (up to 40mA) is set by a single external resistor for the entire chip. The segment drivers are slew-rate limited to reduce EMI.

The user can configure the MAX6954 with digit-by-digit or even segment-by-segment blink control. The driver can use an internal RC oscillator to set multiplex and blink frequencies, or an external clock to enable easy synchronization of multiple drivers.

The driver includes five I/O ports; some or all can be configured as a key-switch reader, which automatically scans and debounces up to 32 switches. One of the I/O ports can also be configured as an interrupt output when a key input is debounced.

The MAX6954 features a 40µA (max), low-power shutdown current, while retaining all data and operates between a 2.7V and 5.5V supply. Automotive temperature range (-40°C to +125°C) is standard. Prices start at $8.69 (1000-up, FOB USA).
