+3.3V, 622Mbps LASER DRIVER FEATURES CURRENT MONITORS AND APC

SUNNYVALE, CA-November 10, 1999-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX3669, a +3.3V, 622Mbps SDH/SONET laser driver with current monitors and automatic power control (APC). The MAX3669 is ideal for applications in 622Mbps SDH/SONET transmission systems such as add/drop multiplexers, digital cross-connects, section regenerators, and optical transmitters. When combined with the MAX3693 4:1 serializer, the MAX3669 forms a complete, low-power 622Mbps transmitter.

The MAX3669 uses only 132mW of power, while exceeding the ITU/Bellcore jitter generation specification by 160psp-p by 60psp-p. The device accepts differential PECL data and clock inputs and provides bias and modulation currents for driving a laser. An APC feedback loop is incorporated to maintain constant average optical power temperature and lifetime. Bias and modulation current monitors that are directly proportional to the laser bias and modulation are included. The MAX3669 also provides enable control and a failure monitor output to indicate when the APC loop is unable to maintain the average optical power. The wide modulation current range of 5mA to 75mA and bias current range of 1mA to 80mA are easy to program, making this product ideal for use in a variety of SDH/SONET applications.

The MAX3669 is available in a small (5mm x 5mm) 32-pin TQFP package and as dice and is specified for the extended-industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). Prices start from $9.75 (1000-up, factory direct, FOB USA). An evaluation kit is available.
