SMALLEST 500mA LOW-DROPOUT LINEAR REGULATOR IN 2.3mm2 UCSP SAVES BOARD SPACE AND COST IN PORTABLES

SUNNYVALE, CA-May 8, 2002-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX1819, the smallest 500mA low-dropout linear regulator available. This device fits in a 0.5mm pitch, 6-pin UCSP package, which measures 2.3mm2 and is only 0.65mm high. The MAX1819 delivers a guaranteed 500mA load with only 133mV of dropout.

The MAX1819 operates from a 2.5V to 5.5V supply. The high-accuracy (±1%) output voltage is preset to popular voltages (1.5V, 1.8V, 2V, 2.5V, 3.3V, and 5V) or can be adjusted from 1.25V to 5.5V with an external resistive divider.

An internal PMOS pass transistor allows the low, 125µA supply current to remain independent of load, extending battery life in portable equipment such as personal digital assistants (PDAs), cellular phones, cordless phones, digital cameras, and notebook computers. Supply current is further reduced to 0.1µA in logic-controlled shutdown.

The MAX1819 features an active-low, open-drain reset output that indicates short-circuit protection, thermal overload protection, and when the output is out of regulation.

The MAX1819 is available in a space-saving 6-pin package (on a 3 x 3 grid) and is screened for the extended-industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). Prices start at $1.20 (1000-up, FOB USA). An evaluation kit (MAX1819EVKIT) is available to speed designs.
