INDUSTRY'S FIRST +3.3V, 2.7Gbps AMPLIFIER WITH AUTOMATIC GAIN CONTROL

Note to Editor: The MAX3861 is a significant new product. It is the first +3.3V, 2.7Gbps amplifier with automatic gain control specifically designed for WDM transmission systems using optical amplifiers.
SUNNYVALE, CA-March 18, 2002-Maxim announces the MAX3861 low-power amplifier with automatic gain control (AGC) specifically designed for WDM transmission systems using optical amplifiers. Operating from a single +3.3V supply, this AGC amplifier linearly amplifies or attenuates the input signal to a fixed output voltage swing in a fully differential approach. Both the input and output are on-chip terminated to match 50 lines.

The AGC amplifier accepts differential or single-ended current-mode logic (CML) input data at rates up to 2.7Gbps. The differential output swing can be adjusted between 400mV to 920mV (typ) over a 46dB input dynamic range. Variation in output swing is controlled to within 0.5dB over a 16dB input variation. The MAX3861 provides a received-signal-strength indicator (RSSI) that is linear within 5% for input signal levels up to 100mVP-P and a loss-of-signal (LOS) indicator with programmable threshold.

The MAX3861 is available in a 24-pin QFN package with exposed pad and operates over the -40°C to +85°C temperature range. Prices start at $14.25 (1000-up, FOB USA). Evaluation kits are available.
