LOW-POWER QUAD 10- AND 12-BIT DACs HAVE I2C-COMPATIBLE INTERFACE

SUNNYVALE, CA-February 27, 2002-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the new quad 10-bit MAX5841 and 12-bit MAX5842 DACs with a 2-wire I2C-compatible serial interface. Each device can have one of four unique I2C addresses, allowing multiple devices to be hung from a single bus. The MAX5841/MAX5842 come in 10-pin µMAX packages and use less than 395µA supply current at 3V, optimizing them for portable battery-powered equipment.

These new multichannel DACs operate on a single 2.7V to 5.5V supply range, typically consuming just 1.4mW at 5V and 0.69mW at 3V. A power-down feature is available on all devices, which reduces typical current consumption to 1µA maximum. The output is internally switched during power-down to a resistor network of either 1kΩ or 100kΩ to ground, or high impedance.

The MAX5841/MAX5842 use an external reference that allows an input range from 0 to VDD. Also included is a power-on reset circuit to ensure the devices power up to 0V and remain there until a valid write takes place. An on-chip precision output buffer amplifier allows a Rail-to-Rail output swing with a 4ms settling time. Compatible with SMBus™ and I2C interface protocols, the fast-mode 2-wire interface operates at speeds up to 400kHz.

Prices for the MAX5841/MAX5842 in 10-pin µMAX packages start at $3.65 and $6.73, respectively (1000-up FOB USA).
