LOWEST COST 1A TO 15A STEP-DOWN DC-DC SOLUTION
Note to Editor: The MAX1966/MAX1967 use low-cost dual N-channel switches, 2.7V to 28V input, and 0.8V output.
SUNNYVALE, CA-February 26, 2002-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX1966/MAX1967 voltage-mode, 100kHz PWM step-down DC-DC controllers to provide the lowest cost 1A to 15A power supplies. Both devices feature digital soft-start, current-limit, and short-circuit protection; 100kHz operation allows the use of low-cost inductors and electrolytic capacitors; 5 (max) gate drivers permit up to 15A output current. Applications include set-top boxes, linear regulator replacement in network equipment, and telecom central office equipment, DVD read/write drives, automotive, consumer, and industrial products.
Both devices feature powerful gate drivers rated at 2.5 (typ) and 5 (max), allowing a wide range of output currents from 1A to 15A. They drive external N-channel FETs and provide current-limit and short-circuit protection without requiring a current-sense resistor, saving cost and improving efficiency. The output voltage range extends from 0.8V to 0.88 x VIN.
The MAX1967 has a 2.7V to 28V input range and is suitable for unregulated wall-cube inputs or 3.3V/5V/12V/24V bus applications. The MAX1966 has a 2.7V to 5.5V input range and is designed to address 3.3V and 5V bus applications.
The MAX1966ESA comes in an 8-pin SO package, with prices starting at $0.80 (1000-up, FOB USA). The MAX1967EUB comes in a 10-pin µMAX package and prices start at $0.88 (1000-up, FOB USA). Both devices are specified for the extended-industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). The MAX1966 and MAX1967 EVKITs are available to speed designs.
