CLEAN XAUI INTERFACES WITH QUAD BACKPLANE EQUALIZER
Note to Editor: The MAX3981 is a significant new product. It is the only equalizer optimized for XAUI cable interface applications.
SUNNYVALE, CA-December 4, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX3981 XAUI quad 3.125Gbps equalizer (CDR) for the next generation of 10Gigabit Ethernet backplane applications. The MAX3981 offers industry-leading features and performance with minimal impact on board area and power budgets. Implemented in Maxims second-generation SiGe process, the MAX3981 consumes only 175mW per channel (700mW total) with a +3.3V supply. The XAUI quad equalizer provides reamplification and reshaping for four lanes of 8b/10b encoded 3.125Gbps data in one low-power package. It attenuates noise and jitter accumulated from MAC to PMD or from MAC to switch. In support of the IEEE-802.3ae XAUI interface, the MAX3980 allows XAUI lanes to reach up to 10m (33ft) with inexpensive twin-axial cable for extended backplane applications.
The MAX3980s receive equalization compensates for high-frequency loss and ISI encountered with twin-axial cable or shielded twisted pair, allowing for
a maximum cable distance spanning 10m (33ft). The receiver accepts four XAUI lanes of 3.125Gbps CML data signals. The regenerated XAUI lanes are transmitted as CML signals. The source impedance and termination impedance are 100Ω differential. A power-saver state allows reduced power operation and a signal-detect feature detects signal activity on channel 1.
The MAX3981 is available in a 7mm x 7mm, 44-pin QFN package with exposed pad and operates from a +3.3V supply over a temperature range of 0°C to +85°C. Prices start at $16.50 (1000-up, FOB USA). Evaluation kits are available.
