28V, PWM, STEP-UP DC-DC CONVERTER DELIVERS HIGH CURRENT

SUNNYVALE, CA—May 25, 1999—Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX618 CMOS PWM step-up DC-DC converter that generates output voltages up to 28V and accepts inputs from +3V to +28V. An internal 2.2A, 0.3 ohm switch eliminates the need for an external power MOSFET and delivers 50% more output than similar-sized competitive 1.5A devices. Typical applications include LCD displays, telecom, industrial +24V and +28V systems, and buck-boost (SEPIC) converters for automotive-powered systems.

A fixed-frequency PWM control scheme with Maxim’s Idle Mode™ operation at light loads minimizes noise and ripple, while maximizing efficiency over a wide range of load current. No-load operating current is 500µA, which allows efficiency up to 93%. In shutdown, supply current drops to only 3µA. The fast 250kHz switching frequency allows the use of small surface-mount inductors and capacitors. Adaptive slope compensation allows the MAX618 to accommodate a wide range of input and output voltages with a single compensation capacitor.

The MAX618EEE comes in a thermally enhanced 16-pin QSOP package that dissipates up to 1W and is the same size as a standard eight-pin SO. The parts are screened for the extended-industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). Prices start from $3.25 (1000-up, FOB USA). A preassembled evaluation kit (MAX618EVKIT) is available with recommended external components to reduce design time.
