MOST EFFICIENT, SMALLEST 1.4MHz SOT23 CURRENT-MODE STEP-UP DC-DC CONVERTER

 
 

SUNNYVALE, CA-November 29, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX1896, the smallest and most efficient 300mA current-mode step-up DC-DC converter. It switches at 1.4MHz and fits in a SOT23 package. It is pin compatible with the LT1613 and has lower ON-resistance (0.7 vs. 1) and lower quiescent supply current (200µA vs. 3mA).

The MAX1896 is intended for notebook computers, LCD panels, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and other portable battery-operated equipment. The input range is 2.6V to 5.5V and the output can be set as high as 13V. Output current capability is up to 300mA. Guaranteed output voltage from a 5V input is 12V at 120mA. The MAX1896 also includes features such as 0.1_A logic-controlled shutdown current and programmable soft-start, which is controlled by an external capacitor.

The MAX1896 uses a proprietary, fixed-frequency pulse-width-modulation (PWM) current-mode control scheme that provides low-noise operation, over 90% efficiency, fast transient response, and operation with physically smaller components. Typical external components include one 10µF capacitor and one low-cost 10µH inductor.

The MAX1896EUT is available in a space-saving 6-pin SOT23 package and is screened for the extended-industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). Prices start at $1.30 (2500-up, FOB USA). The MAX1896EVKIT (evaluation kit) is available to speed designs.
