3V TO 5.5V, 2.5Gbps SFP MSA-COMPLIANT, LAN AND VCSEL LASER DRIVER

SUNNYVALE, CA-November 29, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX3996 2.5Gbps laser driver for small form factor (SFF) and small form factor pluggable (SFP) fiber-optic LAN transmitters. The MAX3996 can drive VCSELs, as well as high-efficiency edge emitting lasers in common anode or differential configurations. The MAX3996 incorporates automatic power control (APC) and provides extensive safety features that guarantee single-point fault protection, and make the driver compatible with the SFF and SFP multisource agreements.

Operating from a single +3.0V to +5.5V supply, the MAX3996 has a programmable bias current range of 1mA to 60mA and a programmable modulation current greater than 30mA, while consuming only 155mW of power. APC adjusts the laser bias current to maintain average optical power, regardless of changes in temperature or laser properties. The MAX3996 can operate up to 3.2Gbps and can be incorporated in a variety of laser packages including low-cost TO-46 headers. Low deterministic jitter of 9psp-p, combined with fast edge transitions provide excellent margins compared to industry-standard eye diagrams.

Available in a 4mm x 4mm 20-pin QFN package over the commercial temperature range (0°C to +70°C), the MAX3996 is priced at $7.85 (1000-up, suggested resale, FOB USA). Evaluation kits are available.
