SUNNYVALE, CA-September 26, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX2754 1.2GHz monolithic VCO with linear modulation input, adding to its family of fully monolithic VCOs designed for 2.4GHz ISM applications. The linear modulation input offers a means to directly FM modulate the VCO with a constant modulation sensitivity over the tuning voltage input range. This technique is ideal for direct frequency-modulation transmit architecture found in FSK modulation systems such as 2.4GHz cordless phones, HomeRF, and Bluetooth radios.
The MAX2754 integrates the oscillator, tank circuit, and a matched output buffer, all in a small 8-pin µMAX package. It is guaranteed to tune from 1145MHz to 1250MHz with a tuning voltage input range of +0.4V to +2.4V, supporting 2.4GHz ISM radios with the VCO running at 1/2 LO frequency. The VCO provides a typical frequency deviation of -500kHz/V, linear to within ±4% over the guaranteed frequency limits. Oscillator phase noise performance is typically -137dBc/Hz at 4MHz offset.
The MAX2754 offers the ease-of-implementation and guaranteed performance found in VCO modules, but at 30% lower cost and 60% reduction in board space. Compared to discrete VCOs, it eliminates the need for any production alignment. The IC operates over a +2.7V to +5.5V supply range and includes a digitally controlled shutdown mode, allowing the implementation of sophisticated power supply management to extend battery life. Internal regulation of the oscillator supply voltage eliminates the need for a dedicated external low dropout regulator (LDO), further reducing cost and size.
