+2.35V TO +5.5V RS-232 TRANSCEIVERS IN UCSP SAVE 70% BOARD SPACE

SUNNYVALE, CA-August 28, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX3228/MAX3229 RS-232 transceivers available in UCSP packaging. These devices are intended for use in space-constrained applications requiring RS-232-compliant signaling, such as PDAs, cell phones, and GPS receivers. The MAX3228/MAX3229 save more than 70% board space over existing TSSOP solutions.

The MAX3228/MAX3229 operate from a single +2.35V to +5.5V power supply. These devices include a switchover circuit that changes the mode of operation from RS-232-compliant with VCC > +3.1V to RS-232-compatible with VCC < +3.1V. The switchover circuitry extends battery life by reducing the supply current requirements. These devices are compatible with multiple logic families. A separate logic supply input, VL, can be connected to a supply as low as +1.65V.

The MAX3228/MAX3229 also feature AutoShutdown, reducing supply current to 1µA when there is not a valid RS-232 level on the receiver inputs. The MAX3228 features two transmitters and two receivers, and the MAX3229 has one transmitter and one receiver. All devices operate at data rates up to 250kbps.

The MAX3228/MAX3229 are available in the extended temperature range in a 6 x 5 UCSP, with prices starting at $1.80 (1000-up, FOB USA).
