±1°C ACCURATE, SMBus-Compatible, TEMPERATURE SENSOR WITH OVERTEMPERATURE ALARMS MONITORS AND PROTECTS NEXT-GENERATION CPUs

SUNNYVALE, CA-September 10, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX6657 remote-junction SMBus-compatible temperature sensor, further enhancing Maxim’s line of remote-junction temperature sensors for use with next-generation CPUs.

The MAX6657 is a precise digital temperature sensor that measures both the temperature of a remote diode-connected transistor and its own die temperature. The remote channel can also be used to measure the die temperature of other ICs, such as microprocessors that contain an on-chip diode-connected transistor. Remote accuracy is ±1°C from +60°C to +100°C with no calibration required, and local temperature accuracy is ±2.0°C from +60°C to +100°C. The MAX6657 features extended temperature resolution (0.125°C), which allows precise monitoring of temperature variations.

Functionally equivalent and register-compatible with the industry-standard MAX1617 and MAX6654, the MAX6657 includes an additional over-temperature comparator/interrupt output (OVERT1). The temperature threshold is user-programmable over the SMBus-compatible interface. Housed in an SO-8 package, the MAX6657 also differs from the MAX1617 in that shutdown is available only through the software-programmable mode.

Communication with the device is carried out via a 2-wire serial interface accepting standard System Management Bus (SMBus) protocol. This interface is used to program the configuration of the MAX6657, including data format, alarm thresholds, and conversion rate. In addition, the MAX6657 includes an SMBus timeout function to ensure that the SMBus is cleared in the event of a system communication error.

The MAX6657 is register-compatible with the MAX1617 and MAX6654 with additional registers for new features. Temperature data is available in the 7-bit plus sign (1°C resolution) format of the MAX1617A or in an extended-resolution, 10-bit plus sign (0.125°C resolution) format for both local and remote measurements.

Operating supply voltage range is from +3V to +5.5V and the measurement temperature range is from 0°C to +125°C. At the slowest temperature conversion rate, supply current is less than 70µA. Standby current is less than 10µA. Operating temperature range is from -55°C to +125°C. Prices start at $1.89 for the MAX6657 (1000-up, FOB USA).
