INDUSTRY'S FIRST SPI-COMPATIBLE REMOTE-JUNCTION TEMPERATURE SENSORS IN A TINY 8-PIN SOT

SUNNYVALE, CA-September 27, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX6627/MAX6628 remote-junction temperature sensors. Housed in tiny 8-pin SOT packages, these devices can directly measure the die temperature of a discrete diode or ICs equipped with an on-chip substrate transistor.

Measurement accuracy is ±1°C when 0°C < TRJ < +125°C and TA = +30°C, and ±2.4°C when -55°C < TRJ < +100°C and 0°C < TA < +70°C. The MAX6627 and MAX6628 are equipped with an internal 12-bit plus sign analog-to-digital converter providing 0.0625°C resolution.

The MAX6627/MAX6628 will interpret temperature data up to +145°C from the remote sensor. The remote junction can therefore be safely positioned much closer to hot spots such as heat sinks than a local temperature sensor could. Communication is carried out over the read-only SPI-compatible interface, which is able to reach speeds up to 5MHz.

The MAX6627 performs a temperature conversion every 0.5s and has an average supply current of 200µA (typ). The MAX6628 performs a temperature conversion every 8s and has an average supply current of just 30µA (typ). Temperature data from the most recent completed conversion is available over the SPI-compatible bus interface and can be read at any time.

Both devices operate with a supply voltage between 3.0V and 5.5V. Pulling the CS pin low puts the device into shutdown mode, consuming 5µA (max) of current. The MAX6627 and MAX6628 operate over the military temperature range from -55°C to +125°C.

Prices start at $1.78 for the MAX6627 and $1.82 for the MAX6628 (2500-up, FOB USA).
