FAN CONTROLLER/DRIVER WITH FACTORY-PROGRAMMED TEMPERATURE THRESHOLDS PROVIDES RELIABLE SYSTEM PROTECTION

SUNNYVALE, CA-October 25, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX6665 fan controller with a fully integrated thermal switch and an internal power transistor for driving a cooling fan. Housed in a small 8-pin SO, the MAX6665 monitors system temperature and activates the FANOUT pin to power the fan when temperature rises above a factory-programmed threshold.

The MAX6665 is available with factory-programmed temperature thresholds from +40°C to +70°C in 5°C increments. Accuracy of the fan activation trip point is ±1°C (typ) and ±3°C (max) for all trip thresholds. By pin-selecting the hysteresis of the fan trip point to 1°C, 4°C, or 8°C, a simple on/off fan control system is created. Perfectly suited for 5V, 12V, or 24V brushless DC cooling fans, the MAX6665 can drive a fan rated up to 250mA. A special exposed-paddle packaging technique enables the device to dissipate heat from the internal power FET.

The MAX6665 is equipped with two additional overtemperature outputs, WARN and OT. WARN is activated when the temperature is 15°C above the fan activation threshold and OT is activated when the temperature is 30°C above the fan activation threshold. These features can be used to safely power down systems that are overheated.

The fan control loop can be overridden and the fan can be turned on at any time by setting the FORCEON pin low. The FANON active-high output indicates that the fan is on, either by exceeding the temperature threshold or from being forced on. FANON is low when the fan is turned off.

The MAX6665 operates with a supply voltage between +2.7V and +5.5V and has an unloaded supply current of just 65µA (typ). The MAX6665 operates over the automotive temperature range (-40°C to +125°C).
