INDUSTRY'S FIRST USB-POWERED Li+ BATTERY CHARGER IC

SUNNYVALE, CA-May 22, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX1811, which is the first lithium-ion (Li+) battery charger IC that can be powered directly from a USB port (or from an external supply up to 6.5V). It operates without microprocessor control and is intended for charging a single Li+ battery cell at up to 500mA. The battery-charging voltage is pin-strap set to either 4.1V or 4.2V, and its tolerance is ±0.5% total for maximum charging capacity. The charge current can be set to either 100mA or 500mA using logic control, allowing it to meet the USB current standards.

This simple linear charger requires no inductor, and its MOSFET power switch is built in, saving space. It comes in a thermally enhanced 8-pin SO package capable of dissipating up to 1.4W. As a safety feature, it also contains thermal limiting. An automatic adapter detector is also built in, which eliminates the need for a reverse protection diode, further saving space and cost.

The charger conditions low-voltage "near-dead" cells prior to fast-charging. An optional LED can be connected to visually indicate the charge and fault status.

The MAX1811ESA is screened for the extended-industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). Prices start at $1.70 (1000-up, US recommended resale).
