ULTRA-SMALL 16-BIT DACs IN µMAX PACKAGES OFFER LOW-POWER SOLUTIONS

 
 

SUNNYVALE, CA-November 28, 2000-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX5441–MAX5444, ultra-small unbuffered 16-bit serial DACs in 8-pin and 10-pin µMAX (3mm x 5mm) packages that use half the space of comparable devices in SOIC. The MAX5441/MAX5443 incorporate unipolar outputs whereas the MAX5442/MAX5444 incorporate matched scaling resistors for use with an external op-amp to provide bipolar operation. These products operate from single +3V or +5V supplies, requiring 120µA of supply current. The MAX5441–MAX5444 are the first precision 16-bit DACs capable of +3V operation and can be operated as low as +2.7V. These small DACs are ideal for battery-powered devices, industrial process controls, and test and measurement equipment.

MAX5441–MAX5444 support a fast 25MHz serial interface and are SPI™, QSPI™, and MICROWIRE™ compatible. The DAC output can swing rail-to-rail. Its reference input accepts ranges of +2V to VDD, allowing for a wide selection of voltage references. The DAC output swings from 0 to VREF without any degradation in performance. DNL is guaranteed monotonic and INL is ±2LSB, making them ideal for applications requiring precision. The MAX5441–MAX5444 respond to a full-scale output change in 1µs. On power-up, the DAC output is reset to ground for unipolar and midscale for bipolar operation. Schmitt trigger inputs allow for direct optocoupler interface, making these DACs useful in industrial process control applications that require hysteresis on the digital inputs.

If 16 bits are not necessary, the 14-bit MAX5141–MAX5144 are less expensive, lower-resolution ICs. The 16-bit MAX5441–MAX5444 prices start at $9.95 (1000-up, FOB USA).
