ULTRA-SMALL, SOT23 LCD BIAS SUPPLY USES INTERNAL SWITCH TO DELIVER UP TO 28V

SUNNYVALE, CA—July 18, 2000—Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX1605/MAX1606 step-up DC-DC converters, which use an internal 0.5A switch to deliver up to 28V for LCD bias applications in cell phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), palmtop computers, and other hand-held portable equipment. These converters have up to 90% efficiency and can deliver 20mA at 20V from a single lithium-ion battery.

The MAX1605 comes in an ultra-small 6-pin SOT23 package. The MAX1606 comes in a small 8-pin µMAX package, but includes an extra switch to provide true shutdown and completely disconnects the output from the input during shutdown.

Both devices allow the peak inductor current limit to be set to 500mA, 250mA, or 125mA, which allows the designer to reduce the output ripple and component size in low-current applications. The ICs’ switching frequency is up to 500kHz, which allows the use of tiny surface-mount components. They have a low 18µA quiescent supply current and operate from a +2.4V to +5.5V supply voltage, but can boost battery voltages as low as 0.8V up to 28V.

The MAX1605/MAX1606 are specified for the extended-industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). Prices start from $1.55 (MAX1605) and $1.75 (MAX1606) (1000 up, FOB USA). Preassembled evaluation kits are available with recommended external components to help reduce design time.
