HOT-SWAP CONTROLLER WITH SELECTABLE LATCHED OR AUTORETRY FAULT MANAGEMENT
SUNNYVALE, CA—August 4, 2000—Maxim introduces the MAX4273 hot swap controller, designed for the safe insertion and removal of line cards in rack-mounted equipment. This feature is most useful for equipment that cannot be powered down during maintenance calls. This device manages the inrush current during live insertion and removal of the line card, ensuring that the backplane voltage does not glitch and reset all the other circuitry in the equipment.
Rated for +2.7V to +13.2V input, this controller integrates many useful features including selectable latched or auto-retry fault management, accurate current sensing, DualSpeed/BiLevel fault protection, adjustable current limit threshold, and ON/OFF control. In addition, the device includes an auxiliary comparator which can be used for voltage monitoring, power sequencing, or for generating power-on-reset signals for a microprocessor. The absolute maximum rating is 15V, allowing the part to withstand high inductive kickback voltages during board removal. An on-board charge pump provides the gate drive for driving an external N-FET.
The MAX4273 is available in the extended temperature range (-40°C to +85°C) in the 16-pin SO package and a 16-pin QSOP package. Prices start from $2.16 for the SO and from $2.24 for the QSOP (1000-up, FOB USA).
