Ultra-Low-Jitter, Quad-/Triple-Output Clock Generators Provide High-Frequency Timing Solutions for Network Equipment

Low-Jitter, Precision CLock Generators
Low-Jitter, Precision CLock Generators

Note to Editor:
  • The MAX3624/MAX3625 are ultra-low-jitter, quad-/triple-output clock generators.
  • These devices provide a high-frequency clock signal from a low-frequency crystal resonator or reference clock input.
  • They integrate a crystal oscillator and a PLL clock multiplier to generate a high-frequency clock signal.
  • The MAX3624/MAX3625 are ideal for Ethernet, Fibre Channel, wireless base-station, and high-end server applications.

SUNNYVALE, CA—January 14, 2008—Maxim Integrated Products (Pink Sheets: MXIM) introduces the MAX3624/MAX3625 high-performance, quad-/triple-output clock generators for network equipment. These devices utilize a low-noise VCO and PLL architecture to generate a high-frequency, ultra-low-jitter (0.36psRMS) clock signal from a low-frequency crystal resonator or reference clock input. Whereas conventional solutions require an expensive crystal oscillator and fanout buffer to distribute multiple low-jitter, high-frequency clock signals, the MAX3624/MAX3625 only require an external, packaged, AT-cut fundamental crystal. Thus reducing the space and cost of the total clock-distribution solution, these devices are ideal for applications such as Ethernet switch routers, storage-area network switches, wireless base-station channel cards, and server clock generation and distribution.

To further reduce overall BOM, the MAX3624 provides four outputs from two output divider banks: one bank provides two LVPECL outputs up to 320MHz; the other bank provides one LVPECL output up to 320MHz and one LVCMOS output up to 160MHz. The MAX3625 provides three outputs from two output divider banks: one bank provides two LVPECL outputs up to 320MHz; the other bank provides one LVPECL output up to 320MHz. The output dividers are programmable, allowing designers to set the outputs to the frequencies required by their application.

The MAX3624/MAX3625 provide excellent, -57dBc power-supply noise rejection to minimize jitter degradation and ease design for a noisy system environment. The MAX3624 is fully specified over the 0°C to +85°C extended temperature range and operates from 3.3V ±5%. It is available in a small, 5mm x 5mm, lead-free, 32-pin TQFN package. Prices start at $17.14 (1000-up, FOB USA). The MAX3625 is fully specified over the 0°C to +70°C temperature range and operates from 3.3V ±5%. It is available in a small, 5mm x 5mm, lead-free, 24-pin TSSOP package. Prices start at $9.20 (1000-up, FOB USA). To speed design, evaluation kits are available for both the MAX3624 and the MAX3625.
