Overvoltage-Protection Controllers with Integrated nFET

|
Note to Editor:
- The MAX4943–MAX4946/MAX4949 is a family of overvoltage protection controllers.
- MAX4943–MAX4946/MAX4949 integrate an nFET, eliminating the need for an external FET.
- An nFET requires a smaller area (almost half) than a pFET, for a given RON, thus saving space.
- The MAX4943–MAX4946/MAX4949 are ideal for devices that implement battery charging from a wall adapter.

SUNNYVALE, CA—August 2, 2007—Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX4943*–MAX4946/MAX4949 overvoltage-protection (OVP) controllers with an integrated nFET. These devices provide OVP up to +28V.
The MAX4943–MAX4946/MAX4949 provide overvoltage trip levels from 4.56V to 8.9V and undervoltage trip levels from 2.45V to 4.15V. Integrating the nFET switch into the devices' 2mm x 2mm µDFN package reduces the overall external system component count and required board space. Consequently, these devices are ideal for space-constrained applications such as cell phones, digital still cameras, PDAs, and MP3 players.
Additional controller features include a 1.7A (typ) current-limiting function to protect the circuitry against short-circuit conditions, a FLAG signal to notify the processor that an overvoltage or undervoltage fault condition occurred, thermal-shutdown protection, ±15kV ESD protection, and 30ms startup delay and retry times.
These OVP controllers are specified to operate over the -40°C to +85°C industrial temperature range. The MAX4943–MAX4946/MAX4949 are available in a 2mm x 2mm, 8-pin µDFN package. Prices start at $1.14 (1000-up, FOB USA).
*Future product-contact factory for availability.
