SUNNYVALE, CA—January 4, 2007—Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX1300-MAX1303 and MAX1032-MAX1035 family of 16-/14-bit ADCs. These new devices are the first to have the ±12V input range. Integrated software lets the user remotely configure each input of equipment to a unique voltage range. Each input channel can be programmed with seven different input ranges for single-ended inputs and three different input ranges for differential inputs. The programmable analog input-voltage ranges are ±24V, ±12V, ±6V, ±3V, 0 to +12V, -12V to 0, 0 to +6V, and -6V to 0.

Unprecedented ADC Capability with Design Flexibility

Traditionally, competitive analog-to-digital converters processed up to ±10V while putting out an FSR value above that. "This new family of ADCs is the industry's first to have a ±12V voltage-input range, which allows the user to detect and process sensor overvoltage conditions," commented Chris Mostoller, Business Manager for precision ADC products. Mostoller continued: "Designers now have the unprecedented flexibility of remotely programming each input to a unique input-voltage range. They will also save many external protection components because each input is protected from transients up to ±16.5V."

This ADC family offers up to eight single-ended inputs or four differential inputs, all of which are ±16.5V overvoltage tolerant. Compared to traditional designs, this capability gives the customer more flexibility when selecting an ADC for a design, and easy reuse of their design across different platforms.

The new ADCs allow accurate measurement of temp sensors, Wheatstone bridges, pressure sensors, PLC, 4mA to 20mA loop under normal operating conditions, and overvoltage conditions utilizing the ±12V analog input-voltage range. Mostoller explained "Other data converters output a full-scale reading when the sensor is either in an overvoltage condition or when it is broken. The wide input-voltage range of our ADCs will help the user identify the state of the sensor."

Overall Specifications Meet or Exceed Industry Expectations

Excellent AC performance (THD of -97dB, typ) and DC accuracy (±2 LSB INL, max) make the devices ideal for industrial process control, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems.

The MAX1300-MAX1303 and MAX1032-MAX1035 operate from a single +5V supply and feature a separate DVDD pin, which allows direct interfacing to +2.7V to +5.25V digital logic. An internal or external 4.096V reference determines the full-scale analog-input range.

Packaging varies by the parts. The 16-bit, 8-channel ADCs with a ±12V/±VREF input range (MAX1300*/MAX1302*) are available in a 24-pin TSSOP, while the 16-bit, 4-channel devices with a ±12V/±VREF input range (MAX1301/MAX1303) are available in a 20-pin TSSOP. The 14-bit, 8-channel ADCs with a ±12V/±VREF input range (MAX1032*/MAX1034*) are available in a 24-pin TSSOP, and the 14-bit, 4-channel parts with a ±12V/±VREF input range (MAX1033/MAX1035) are available in a 20-pin TSSOP. Prices for these ADCs start at $17.95 (1000-up, FOB USA).
