Low-Cost, 24-Bit, I2S-Compatible Stereo DAC Provides 87dB Dynamic Range

[High-Resolution Images]

SUNNYVALE, CA—August 9, 2006—Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX5556, a low-cost, 24-bit, I2S-compatible stereo DAC. This sigma-delta DAC has less than -87dB of total harmonic distortion plus noise, and more than 87dB of dynamic range. It integrates interpolation, deemphasis, analog output filters, click-and-pop-free power-up and power-down, and line level outputs that swing 3.5VP-P with a 10kohm load. These features make the MAX5556 ideal for digital audio applications.

The MAX5556 includes automatic clock divisor detection (MCLK/LRCLK) and operates with a sampling frequency between 2kHz and 50kHz from an MCLK up to 25MHz. The output is muted if the clock signal is lost, and then returns to normal operation without glitches when the clock signal is restored.

The MAX5556 operates from a single +5V supply and has a 16-bit to 24-bit I2S-compatible serial interface. Future parts are offered for applications not requiring I2S compatibility: the MAX5557* with a 16-bit to 24-bit left-justified interface; the MAX5558* with a 16-bit right-justified interface; and the MAX5559* with an 18-bit right-justified interface. All devices are available in a narrow, 8-pin SO package, and priced at only $0.99 (1,000-up, FOB USA).
