First Integrated XFP Controller-Monitor Simplifies 10G Module Design

DALLAS, TX-March 14, 2006-Dallas Semiconductor (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the DS1862, the industry's first integrated XFP controller-monitor that greatly simplifies the design of 10G XFP optical transceiver modules. The DS1862 reduces component count and layout area by integrating the laser-driver control, system monitoring, and memory required for these XFP modules. The DS1862 register and memory architecture is fully compliant with the XFP MSA (Multi-Source Agreement).

The DS1862 controls the laser driver with an average power control (APC) loop for bias current management and a 256-position temperature-controlled DAC for extinction ratio control. An integrated temperature sensor and 13-bit ADC monitor system temperature, VCC, and five external analog signals. Programmable alarm and warning trip points for all monitored signals alert the system to out-of-tolerance conditions.

This controller-monitor also includes fast trip comparators and a FET-drive output that turn off the laser in the event of an eye safety violation. An additional, integrated 8-bit DAC controls other system parameters such as the threshold voltage for the receive signal conditioner. Communication with the device is achieved over an I2C serial interface.

The DS1862 is available in a space-saving 5mm x 5mm BGA package (0.8mm pitch). It operates over a -40° Celsius to +100° Celsius temperature range. Pricing for the DS1862 starts at $2.25 (10,000-up, FOB USA).
