76V Input, Low Quiescent Current, 2A Buck Converter Has Internal Switch to Reduce System Cost
SUNNYVALE, CA-March 13, 2006-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX5090, an easy-to-use, high-efficiency, high-voltage step-down DC-DC converter that delivers up to 2A output current. The device includes an internal, high-side, n-Channel MOSFET to obtain high efficiency and reduce overall system cost.
The MAX5090 operates over a wide 6.5V to 76V input-voltage range and withstands up to 80V transient voltage spikes at the input. It features a no-load quiescent current of 310µA at 76V input voltage. The device requires no external compensation, thus simplifying power-supply design. The MAX5090 uses off-the-shelf inductors readily available from specified vendors.
This pulse-width-modulated (PWM) converter operates at a fixed 127kHz switching frequency at heavy loads, and automatically switches to pulse-skipping mode to provide low quiescent current and high efficiency at light loads. Furthermore, the MAX5090 can be synchronized with an external, system clock frequency in noise-sensitive applications.
The MAX5090 has an external ON/OFF-bar function that puts the device into a low-current shutdown mode and reduces the supply current to less than 20µA. The device includes undervoltage lockout, cycle-by-cycle current limit, hiccup-mode output, short-circuit protection, and overtemperature shutdown.
Rated for operation over the automotive temperature range (-40°C to +125°C), the MAX5090 is available in a tiny 5mm x 5mm, thermally enhanced, surface-mount 16-pin TQFN package. Prices start at $2.20 (1000-up, FOB USA).
