Programmable Spread-Spectrum, Single-Link, 27-Bit, DC-Balanced Serializer/Deserializer Chipset Reduces EMI for LCD Displays


SUNNYVALE, CA-February 15, 2006-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the latest members of the Company's high-speed LVDS SERDES family-the MAX9247 serializer and MAX9248 deserializer, a programmable spread-spectrum, 27-bit, DC-balanced LVDS chipset. To reduce EMI, the MAX9247 provides proprietary data encoding, while the MAX9248's output clock and data are spread over a specified range of ±2% or ±4%. The chipset further reduces EMI by communicating over a DC-balanced, single twisted-pair or differential line, which not only allows isolation between the serializer and deserializer through AC-coupling, but also simplifies design and reduces system cost. The MAX9247/MAX9248 operate over a wide 2.5MHz to 42MHz frequency range, making them ideal for QVGA to WVGA LCD displays up to 1280 x 480 resolution, as used in automotive navigation and infotainment systems.

The MAX9247 serializes 18-bits of LVTTL/LVCMOS RGB digital video data, 9-bits of LVTTL/LVCMOS control data, and clock into a single LVDS serial clock and data stream. The MAX9248 then deserializes that single LVDS serial input into 27 single-ended LVTTL/LVCMOS outputs. The chip-set thus reduces the number of wires or traces from 28 to 2, saving space and cost in system interconnects such as cables and backplanes. Hot-swappable capability increases fault tolerance and allows "on-the-fly" frequency programming. The LVDS input and output signals meet the requirements of the ANSI TIA/EIA 644 LVDS standard.

The MAX9247 operates from a 3.3V ±10% core supply and features a separate input supply for interfacing to 1.8V to 3.3V logic levels. The MAX9248 features a separate output supply for interfacing to 1.8V to 3.3V logic level inputs. Both devices are specified for operation from -40 degrees Celsius to +85 degrees Celsius. The LVDS inputs and outputs meet IEC 61000-4-2 Level 4 ESD specifications (±15kV Air Discharge, ±8kV Contact Discharge), as well as ISO 10605 (±30kV Air Discharge, ±10kV Contact Discharge).

The MAX9247 and MAX9248 are available in 48-pin TQFP and TQFN* packages. Prices start at $5.86 (1000 up, FOB USA).
