Industry's Only High-Current-Output, Dual DACs to Have Pin-Selectable SPI or I2C Serial Interface in 3mm x 3mm TQFN

Note to Editor: These ICs are the industry's smallest dual, current-output DACs. They are available in a 3mm x 3mm TQFN, while the closest competition is available in a 6mm x 5mm TSSOP. The MAX5548/MAX5550 are the only current-output DACs to feature a pin-selectable SPI or I2C interface. These devices consume only 5microamps in shutdown, and feature parallelable outputs that provide up to 60mA (30mA each). They are ideal for pin-diode biasing in base stations and wireless applications.

SUNNYVALE, CA-November 8, 2005-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX5548 (8-bit) and MAX5550 (10-bit) dual, 30mA, current-output digital-to-analog converters (DACs) in a 3mm x 3mm TQFN package. The 9mm2 TQFN package saves considerable board space compared to the nearest competitive solution at 30mm2 in a TSSOP. These devices feature a pin-selectable SPI™ or I2C* interface. They are also highly accurate and guaranteed monotonic over the -40°C to +85°C operating temperature range. These low-cost, current-output DACs are ideal for applications such as PIN-diode biasing, RF attenuator control, and VCO tuning.

The MAX5548/MAX5550 feature a single +2.7V to +5.5V supply range and low 200microamp/DAC supply current. A software-selectable shutdown feature reduces the supply current to 5microamps (max). These devices feature a +1.25V internal reference, but also accept an external reference from +1.225V to +1.275V. A DOUT output allows daisy-chaining of multiple devices, or it may be used for readback in SPI mode. Addressing options allow multiple devices to be connected to the same bus in I2C applications.

The MAX5548/MAX5550 are available in ultra-small, 3mm x 3mm, 16-pin TQFN packages. Prices for the MAX5548/MAX5550 start at $2.97 and $3.37, respectively (1000-up, FOB USA).
