2.2MHz Dual-Output Buck or Boost Converter with Internal Power MOSFETs for Point-of-Load Automotive Applications

SUNNYVALE, CA-April 7, 2005-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX5073, a dual-output DC-DC converter with integrated high-side n-channel MOSFETs. The device is targeted at point-of-load power-supply applications and automotive radio and instrumentation-cluster applications.

The MAX5073’s input voltage range is 4.5V to 5.5V or 5.5V to 23V, while the two outputs are capable of delivering 1A and 2A, respectively. In automotive applications, the MAX5073 may be preceded by the MAX6398 to protect the device from high-voltage load-dump transients. Each output of the MAX5073 can be configured as a buck or a boost converter, thus allowing great flexibility in power-supply designs. The switching frequency is externally programmable from 200kHz to 2.2MHz. This choice of switching frequency not only enables trade-offs between power-supply efficiency and size, but also eliminates harmonics in noise-sensitive applications such as a radio power supply. As each converter in the MAX5073 runs 180º out-of-phase, the input ripple current and the size of the input capacitor are reduced. A clock output allows four-phase operation when two power supplies are used. Moreover, the MAX5073 can be synchronized to an external clock for noise-sensitive applications. The device uses external compensation, which allows use of lowest cost inductors and output capacitors while optimizing loop stability and thereby reducing bill-of-material cost. Additional features include individual converter shutdown, digital soft-start, power good outputs, short-circuit protection, and thermal shutdown.

The MAX5073 operates over the -40ºC to +85ºC extended temperature range and is available in a space-saving 5mm x 5mm, 28-pin TQFN package. Prices start at $1.63 (1000-up, FOB USA).
