Step-Down DC-DC Integrates 2 LDOs and Reset in Tiny TDFN to Power Microprocessor in Portables

SUNNYVALE, CA-February 28, 2005-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX8620Y, a micro power-management integrated circuit (microPMIC). This new device integrates a 500mA step-down DC-DC converter, two 300mA low-dropout linear regulators, and a 30ms reset into a small 9mm(2) TDFN package with a maximum height of 0.8mm. The MAX8620Y's integration saves space and cost powering the microprocessor in portable equipment where efficiency and total solution size are critical. Applications for the MAX8620Y include cell phones, smartphones, and MP3 players. The tiny TDFN package saves 78% of the space required by alternative designs. Typical alternative solutions use separate ICs that occupy 41mm(2).

Providing up to 92% efficiency, the 4MHz synchronous step-down DC-DC converter uses a low-profile 1 microhenry inductor and tiny ceramic capacitors. Its fast, 100ns transient response fits demanding processor applications like graphics processing, video streaming, and gaming. The two LDOs provide low-noise 45 microvolts root-mean-square output, and their output voltages are pin-programmable to save size and maintain flexibility. The reset output warns the system of impending power loss, thereby allowing safe shutdown.

The MAX8620Y is available in a space-saving 3mm x 3mm, 14-pin TDFN package, screened for the extended-industrial temperature range (-40 degrees Celsius to +85 degrees Celsius). Prices start at $2.20 (2500-up, FOB USA). The MAX8620YEVKIT (evaluation kit) is available to speed designs.
