INDUSTRY'S SMALLEST 3.3V BUCK/BOOST PUMP DELIVERS 100mA, FITS IN 0.05in2 (32mm2)

SUNNYVALE, CA—February 8, 2000—Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX1759, a regulated charge-pump DC-DC converter that generates a fixed 3.3V (or adjustable) output voltage from a +1.6V to +5.5V input supply. This is particularly useful when the supply is a lithium-ion battery that can be at 4.2V at full charge and below 2.9V at end of life. The MAX1759's ability to produce a regulated output voltage whether the input is above or below the desired output is unique among charge-pump converters. The MAX1759 delivers a guaranteed 100mA output current using only three small ceramic capacitors and does not require any inductor. The entire circuit fits in only 0.05in2 (32mm2).

Quiescent supply current is a low 50µA and drops to only 1µA in shutdown. Unlike typical step-up converters, the output load is completely disconnected from the input during shutdown. The MAX1759 operates at up to 1.5MHz, allowing high-output current with very small external capacitors. An open-drain power-OK output signals when the output is out of regulation.

The MAX1759 features foldback short-circuit protection, which limits the output current if the output is shorted to ground. It also features soft-start, which limits the inrush current during power-up. The MAX1759EUB is screened for the extended-industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C) and comes in a very small 10-pin µMAX package. Prices start from $2.45 (1000-up, FOB USA).
