Industry's Only Dual Temperature Sensor and Fan Controller with RPM Control

SUNNYVALE, CA-September 20, 2004-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX6640, a dual temperature sensor and fan controller with remote-temperature sensing. It provides maximum fan speed and revolutions-per-minute (RPM) control, which improves acoustic performance and extends fan life. A programmable alarm output generates interrupt, throttle, or overtemperature shutdown signals. This combination of features makes the MAX6640 ideal for portable applications where high acoustic performance, high accuracy, and high efficiency are essential, for example, notebook and desktop PCs, and LCD projectors.

With remote-temperature sensing up to 145°C (±1°C accuracy), the MAX6640 monitors its own temperature, and the temperature of two external diode-connected transistors and one remote channel. Its easy-to-use SMBus interface makes the data available to be read at any time. An internal PWM fan-speed controller uses the temperature data to adjust the speed of a cooling fan. This minimizes fan noise and power drain when the system is running cool, but provides maximum cooling when required.

Available in a 16-pin QSOP package, the MAX6640 operates from a 3V to 5.5V input-voltage range and consumes only 500mA of supply current. Prices start at $1.15 (2500-up, FOB USA).

SMBus is a trademark of Intel Corporation.
