DYNAMICALLY ADJUSTABLE, SYNCHRONOUS STEP-DOWN CONTROLLER FOR INTEL'S SPEEDSTEP NOTEBOOK CPUs

SUNNYVALE, CA—January 22, 2000—Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX1717, a buck controller featuring a dynamically adjustable output, ultra-fast transient response, ±1% DC accuracy, and high efficiency needed for leading-edge CPU core power supplies. Maxim's proprietary Quick-PWM constant on-time PWM control scheme handles wide input/output voltage ratios with ease and provides 100ns instant-on response to load transients while maintaining a near-constant switching frequency. The MAX1717 has been optimized for ICs that operate in two or more modes (e.g., CPUs featuring Intel's SpeedStep and AMD's Gemini technologies).

The output voltage can be dynamically adjusted via the 5-bit DAC inputs over a 0.9V-to-2V range. Output slew rate control minimizes battery and inductor surge currents. With this precision circuit, the VOUT slew rate can be tailored to a given application, providing a just-in-time arrival at the new DAC setting.

A unique feature of the MAX1717 is an internal multiplexer that accepts two 5-bit DAC settings with only five digital input pins.

The MAX1717 is screened for the extended temperature range (-40°C to +85°C) and is available in a 24-pin QSOP package. Prices start from $3.89 (1000-up, FOB USA). A preassembled evaluation kit (MAX1717EVKIT) is available with recommended external components to reduce design time.
