DS600 Named Product of the Year
analogZONE has granted the DS600 a Product of the Year award. The DS600 is the industry's lowest cost, ±0.5°C (max) accurate analog-output temperature sensor. The device comes factory calibrated and has a linear-voltage output characteristic, making it simple to use and implement in designs.

"This is a very interesting combination product with an extremely accurate temperature measurement capability, plus a thermostat function and shutdown. Without the thermostat the part would look very like a more accurate version of the LM60 with a comparable output gain and offset, but I suspect that this is really a combination of the talent that went into the Maxim MAX6613 and the Dallas Semiconductor DS60.
"The temperature measurement side of the part has a level-shifted 509 mV dc output offset at 0°C allowing for negative temperatures to be measured without a negative supply rail. The part measures its own temperature so no external components or junctions are required and, presumably, any self-heating has been taken into account in the calibration. The output characteristic is very linear from -40°C to +125°C with a slope of 6.45 mV/°C. Accuracy over that full range is ±0.75°C, improving to ±0.5°C from -20°C to +100°C.
"The thermostat function in the part offers both active-low and active-low pins which are toggled when the voltage on the thermostat pin is exceeded. That voltage would be supplied by the circuit designer to match the point at which operation is required and is internally compared with the output voltage from the temperature sensing. Driving an additional shutdown pin high reduces current consumption and ceases thermal monitoring. With a single rail between 2.7 V and 5.5 V the quiescent current is a maximum of 140 µA, which drops to 2.5 µA in shutdown. Power up time is better than 10 ms.
"The output impedance is quoted at 100 ohms maximum and the part can sink or source a minimum of 10 µA.
"The DS600 should find sockets in battery management, printers, disk drives and portable equipment. It is in a thermally-enhanced package, not because of the power the part dissipates but so that it responds quickly to thermal changes. Pricing in comparison to other high-accuracy temperature sensors is high but if the thermostat function is going to be used it becomes a no-brainer.
"The DS600 is in production in a exposed-pad µSOP-8 priced at $1.80 in 1000-piece lots."
