Powerline Networking

Distribute Data, Audio, Video, and Voice over Existing Power Lines

Powerline Networking Maxim's powerline communication (PLC) solutions provide secure, robust data networks using existing power lines. Virtually any electronic device connected to an electrical power line can use this technology for data communications without additional wiring.

Maxim has solved many of the problems inherent to PLC by applying advanced broadband-communication techniques, such as OFDM, to deliver cost-effective, two-way data communications in the presence of narrowband interferers, group delays, jammer signals, impulsive noise, and frequency-selective attenuations.

HomePlug™ 1.0-Compliant Chipset
This 14Mbps chipset solution consists of the MAX2981 and the MAX2986. The MAX2986 baseband has an open architecture that allows extensive programmability and feature enhancement to provide optimum performance. Flexibility in spectral shaping and tone notching helps your products conform to different regulations worldwide. The MAX2981 analog front-end combines an analog-to-digital converter (ADC), digital-to-analog converter (DAC), signal conditioning, and line driver, thus substantially reducing the overall number of system components.

10kHz to 490kHz OFDM PLC Modem
The MAX2990 modem and the MAX2991 analog front-end provide the industry's first OFDM-based powerline communication solution for the 10kHz to 490kHz frequency range. The chipset delivers up to 100kbps and complies with worldwide signaling regulations, including FCC, CENELEC, and ARIB. This solution is ideal for applications requiring reliable powerline communications over long distances, such as "smart grid" energy management, lighting control, and building, industrial, and home automation.

G3-PLC Compliant PLC Modem
The MAX2992 modem and the MAX2991 analog front-end provide the industry's first G3-PLC compliant powerline communication solution. Conforming to the IEEE® P1901.2 standard, this solution is ideal for applications requiring reliable powerline communications and Mesh networking, such as lighting control, smart grid energy management, and building, industrial, and home automation.

G3-PLC: Smart Grid PLC Specification
The G3-PLC specification includes OFDM-based PHY/MAC layers and a 6LoWPAN adaption layer to transmit IPv6 packets over the power line. It is especially suited for large-scale utility infrastructures. This PLC solution enables a robust data rate in extremely harsh powerline channels, cohabitation with S-FSK technology, and adaptive tone mapping to avoid interfering frequencies. Reliable data rate communications can be maintained over the long distances required by smart grid infrastructures.
