Spread-spectrum oscillators attempt to reduce the spectral EMI emissions from circuits and systems. A clock signal usually provides a single tone spectrum, which can interfere with other systems' inputs, and thus can fail FCC EMI emissions tests. "Dithering" the clock frequency about some narrow range around the desired clock rate, produces a wider spectrum with spectral lines which have lower energy per Hz than the single tone. |
