The MAX3817 3.4Gbps quad equalizer/driver IC compensates for FR4 and cable losses and provides a fully compliant DVI/HDMI (v1.3) TMDS® driver. The device offers up to 15dB input equalization and output-driver preemphasis options of 0, 3.5, and 6.0dB to extend cable reach. The driver can be DC or AC coupled for TMDS.
External back-termination resistor configurations are supported for either DC- or AC-coupled applications. Typical DVI/HDMI output drivers contribute to reflection problems between the connector and the high-impedance (open) TMDS Tx output. Back termination effectively mitigates these reflection problems while keeping common-mode offset to a minimum. The four-channel implementation treats all channels identically. To allow board layout flexibility for DVI and HDMI connectors (which have different channel orders), the clock and data input channels can be arbitrarily assigned. Additionally, an output switch permits popular permutations of channel order to match connector or ASIC routing.
The MAX3817 operates from a standard 3.3V power supply, and is packaged in a 5mm x 5mm, 32-pin TQFN package.
