First ±15KV ESD-Protected USB On-the-Go Transceiver

SUNNYVALE, CA-September 20, 2004-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX3301E USB On-the-Go (OTG) transceiver which is ideal for portable equipment such as cellular phones, PDAs, and digital cameras. USB OTG is a supplement to the USB 2.0 specification that covers peripheral devices that connect directly without the use of a host PC.

The MAX3301E is designed for use in conjunction with dual-role USB controllers that contain host and peripheral functionality. This device integrates a USB OTG transceiver, VBUS charge pump, linear regulator, and an I2C-compatible serial interface. The internal charge pump creates a USB OTG-compliant VBUS output from a VCC input between +3.0V and +4.5V.

The MAX3301E contains detection circuitry for the USB OTG host negotiation protocol (HNP) and session request protocol (SRP). Internal comparators detect the VBUS voltage levels used for HNP and SRP, and this information is stored in registers accessible using the I2C-compatible interface. The MAX3301E also provides ID detection for default host/peripheral assignment and features pullup and pulldown resistors as required by USB.

D+, D-, VBUS, and ID_IN are protected against ESD strikes up to ±15kV, eliminating the need for external protection structures. These pins are protected to ±15kV per the Human Body Model, ±6kV per the IEC1000-4-2 Contact Discharge Method, and ±10kV per the IEC1000-4-2 Air-Gap Discharge Method. The MAX3301E's VL logic supply input allows direct connection with ASICs/CPUs that operate down to +1.65V. These devices feature a low-current shutdown mode.

The MAX3301E operates over the extended temperature range (-40°C to +85°C) in tiny 5mm x 5mm UCSP and 32-pin thin QFN packages. Prices start at $1.50 (1000-up, FOB USA).

Purchase of I2C components from Maxim Integrated Products, Inc., or one of its sublicensed Associated Companies, conveys a license under the Philips I2C Patent Rights to use these components in an I2C system, provided that the system conforms to the I2C Standard Specification as defined by Philips.

UCSP is a trademark of Maxim Integrated Products, Inc.
