SERIAL INTERFACED, 28-PORT, USER-CONFIGURABLE GPIO PORTS SAVE BOARD SPACE

SUNNYVALE, CA-August 14, 2002-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX7300/MAX7301 general-purpose input/output (GPIO) ports. Available in 28-pin DIP, 28-pin SSOP, 36-pin SSOP, and tiny 40-pin QFN packages, the MAX7300/MAX7301 expand the I/O capabilities of microcontrollers and microprocessors to the real world. The MAX7300 uses a 2-wire, I2C -compatible serial interface capable of operating up to 400kbps, and the MAX7301 uses a 4-wire, SPI -compatible serial interface capable of operating up to 26Mbps.

The 28 ports can be configured independently as either CMOS push-pull logic outputs, which can sink 10mA, or Schmitt-trigger logic inputs with or without an internal pullup resistor. GPIO ports may be addressed and updated individually or in random contiguous groups of eight. Transition detection allows level changes on up to seven ports to be flagged automatically to the user through hardware interrupt or register flag.

Both devices feature low-power shutdown and operate from a supply between 2.5V and 5.5V. Maximum supply current is 280µA and maximum standby current is 11µA. Automotive (-40°C to +125°C) temperature range is standard.

Prices start at $2.55 for both the MAX7300 and the MAX7301 (1000-up, FOB USA).

I2C is a trademark of Philips Corp.
SPI is a trademark of Motorola, Inc.
