HIGH-SPEED STEP-DOWN CONTROLLER FOR NEXT-GENERATION NOTEBOOK CPUs

SUNNYVALE, CA-November 5, 1999-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX1714, a single PWM controller with the high efficiency, excellent transient response, and high DC output accuracy needed for stepping down high-voltage batteries to generate low-voltage CPU core supplies in notebooks.

The on-demand PWM controller is Maxim's Quick-PWM™, a free-running, constant-on-time controller with input feed-forward. This provides ultra-fast transient response, wide input-output differential range, low supply current, and tight load regulation characteristics. The MAX1714 is simple, easy to compensate, and doesn't have the noise sensitivity of conventional fixed-frequency current-mode PWMs.

This device is intended for CPU core, chipset, DRAM supplies, and other low-voltage outputs. Its lossless current-sense design provides added efficiency over conventional current-mode PWMs. The MAX1714's current limit is set by adjusting the current-limit threshold with an external resistor (RLIM) at the ILIM pin.

The MAX1714 is offered in two versions. The MAX1714A is available in a 20-pin QSOP package and includes overvoltage protection. The MAX1714B is available in a 16-pin QSOP package with no overvoltage protection. Both devices are screened for the extended-temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). Prices start from $3.43 (1000-up, FOB USA). Preassembled evaluation kits for the A or B version (MAX1714_EVKIT) with recommended external components are available to reduce design time.
