2.5GHz LOGARITHMIC RF POWER AMPLIFIER CONTROLLERS WITH 45dB INPUT RANGE IN AN 8-PIN UCSP

SUNNYVALE, CA-February 26, 2002-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX4000/MAX4001/MAX4002 family of power controller ICs intended for closed-loop bias control of GSM power amplifiers (PAs). These devices operate in the 100MHz to 2.5GHz frequency range, supporting GSM/GPRS, EDGE, or TDMA cellular handset applications. The MAX4000/MAX4001/MAX4002 family is available in an 8-pin bump UCSP measuring 1.6mm x 1.6mm, making these RF PA controllers the smallest in the industry and saving 80% board space over the competition. These logarithmic amplifiers provide much wider measurement ranges and superior accuracy to PA controller applications based on diode-detector methods. This series of controllers offers three input voltage ranges, eliminating the need for external attenuators and simplifying PA control-loop designs. The MAX4000 input voltage range extends from -45dBm to 0dBm. The MAX4001 provides an input voltage range of -35dBm to +10dBm. The MAX4002 input range is -30dBm to +15dBm.

The output stage of this family provides a robust 10mA of output drive with only a 250mV output voltage drop supporting the biasing requirements of an array of power amplifiers and PA modules. All devices have a low-power shutdown mode that reduces power consumption to 15µA.

Prices start at $0.85 (50,000-up, FOB USA).
