FIRST 2.4GHz MONOLITHIC VCO WITH DIFFERENTIAL BUFFERED OUTPUT

SUNNYVALE, CA-February 19, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX2753 2.4GHz monolithic VCO with differential output, adding to its family of fully monolithic VCOs. The MAX2753 integrates the oscillator, tank circuit, and a matched output buffer, all in the small 8-pin µMAX package. It provides ease of implementation and guaranteed performance found in VCO modules, but at 30% lower cost and with 60% less board space. The VCO is compatible with integrated transceiver ICs with a low IF architecture, which typically require an off-chip VCO and a differential interface to reduce spurious noise. Applications include cordless phones, HomeRF, Bluetooth, and other proprietary radios operating in the 2.4GHz ISM band.

The oscillator frequency tuning range is factory-adjusted to provide guaranteed limits. The MAX2753 is guaranteed to tune from 2400MHz to 2500MHz with a +0.4V to +2.4V tuning voltage input range. The oscillator signal is buffered by a differential amplifier stage to provide -8dBm output power. This buffer stage also isolates the oscillator from load impedance variations. Oscillator phase noise is typically -130dBc/Hz at 4MHz offset.

The VCO operates from a single +2.7V to +5.5V supply voltage. Internal regulation of the oscillator supply voltage eliminates the need for a dedicated external low-dropout regulator (LDO), further reducing cost and size. The VCO consumes only 8.6mA of current. In shutdown mode, the current is reduced to 0.2µA. Prices start at $1.69 (1000–up, FOB USA). A fully assembled evaluation kit (MAX2753EVKIT) is available to help reduce design time.
