INDUSTRY'S FIRST HOT-SWAP CONTROLLER WITH INTEGRATED AUTORETRY IN AN SO-8 PACKAGE
SUNNYVALE, CA—July 12, 2000—Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX4271/MAX4272 hot swap controllers, designed for the safe insertion and removal of line cards in rack-mounted equipment. This feature is most useful for equipment that cannot be powered down during maintenance calls. These devices manage the inrush current during live insertion and removal of the line card, ensuring that the backplane voltage does not glitch and reset all the other circuitry in the equipment. The MAX4271/MAX4272 require a minimum number of external components while delivering a reliable and easy to design solution.
Rated from +2.7V to +13.2V input, these controllers integrate many useful features including auto-retry, accurate current sensing, Dual Speed/BiLevel fault protection, ON/OFF control, and current glitch rejection. The absolute maximum rating is 15V, allowing the parts to withstand high inductive kickback voltages during board removal. The integrated auto-retry feature on the MAX4272 allows local fault management, reducing system design and cost. The MAX4271 offers latched fault protection. An on-board charge pump provides the gate drive for an external N-FET.
Both the MAX4271 and MAX4272 are available in the extended temperature range (-40°C to +85°C) in the 8-pin SO package, with prices starting from $1.95 for the MAX4271 and $2.05 for the MAX4272 (1000-up, FOB USA).
